favorite words

I was listening to NPR this evening, and I heard a word that I like a lot: cacophony. Webster (well, okay, not Webster, but dictionary.com) defines cacophony as:

ca⋅coph⋅o⋅ny[kuh-kof-uh-nee]

1. harsh discordance of sound; dissonance: a cacophony of hoots, cackles, and wails.
2. a discordant and meaningless mixture of sounds: the cacophony produced by city traffic at midday.
3.           Music. frequent use of discords of a harshness and relationship difficult to understand.

I don’t like cacophony, but I like the sound of the word.

Speaking of which, I do have a favorite word whose meaning I really like: serendipity.

ser⋅en⋅dip⋅i⋅ty [ser-uhn-dip-i-tee]

1. an aptitude for making desirable discoveries by accident.
2.           good fortune; luck: the serendipity of getting the first job she applied for.

Who wouldn’t like that? Do you have a favorite word?

I always liked silhouette and melancholy — not necessarily for meaning – just for the way they sound.

susurrus — but i seem to always spell it wrong and pronounce it with the wrong stress, the way i spell/pronounce it (the wrong way) makes i sounds like the chinese word with roughly the same meaning.

I can’t think of any favorite English words right now, but I was just discussing my favorite Norwegian word today: rusbrus! It means alcoholic soda-type drinks. But its mostly just a funny sounding word.

  4. I like bombastic, mostly for the way it sounds. And then there is onomatopoeia and queue, which I like to write in cursive because it is fun and looks pretty.
