the most famous black man in the world…

Posted in Uncategorized at 10:28 pm by gradmommy

…is not a professional athelete, does not have his own shoe, and does not rock two turntables and a microphone. He is married to a beautiful black woman with style and grace, and is a father to two beautiful black princesses. And he is the next leader of the most powerful land in the world.

While this is truly historic, how crazy is it that for my children, the very first presidential election of their lifetime features a person who looks like them? They know Obama, they see mommy crying, but they don’t know the significance of my dream that when they one day say, “I’ma be the President one day!” I will be able to look at them and honestly say, “Yes, baby. One day you will.”

Well put! My not quite three year old (at the time) son was asked by his pre-school teacher (along with several other young children) to describe what made the boy in the picture she was holding up different from them. The boy have several facial adornments and these are the only signs of difference on which they remarked. The group of 5 white kids did not mention that the boy, from Africa, was black. Inspired, I tried a little experiment with my 5 year old son the other day. We were watching a program with an adult and child reciting a poem. I asked my son, “How is that child different from you?” I assumed that he has already learned different matters in North American society/culture, but I was surprised with his answer. Without missing a beat he said, “she is black.” Simultaneously he remarked on how the child was a girl (and he a boy) and was black (and he ‘yellow’ – Caucasian). I just felt like this little story applied here. Here in Canada, I was so thrilled to watch Obama win the presidency.

    Dear Gradmommy,

I am really interested in what you have to say about motherhood, academia, and blogging.  I am conducting a survey study of academic mothers who blog and I would like to invite you to participate.  The survey is completely anonymous and takes about an hour to complete (and you can do it in more than one session).  A full description of the study can be found when you click on the link below.  Feel free to pass on the link to the survey to other blogging academic mothers you think might be interested.  I hope you will consider participating.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at annie.fox@uconn.edu

    Thanks!

I love the new picture of your children. They are so sweet and adorable. It is comforting to know that both of them can be president one day.
